Thanks Mark! Very helpful for my F500,

Thanks for the info, my stove is a Jotul F 400 similar design. I notice lately that even at the low draft setting (lever to the left) that there is quite a significant draft coming through. Would you think that taking the mechanism apart, as you did ,and vacuuming the residual ash would improve this? Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing this information. I am considering to buy this model. how many years are you using this? do you recommend this model? what color is better black or red?

Great video, but how do you get to the same slide on an older firelight 12?

I had the same problem. Great solution! Thanks for providing this info!

Thanks for saving our marriage!

Hi, I have an older version of this stove, 1993 with a catalytic converter. The air damper has come completely unlinked and it doesn't appear I have the bolts to remove the cover. Is it possible on the older stoves that the entire front of the stove needs to come off?
Also, do you have any ideas on replacing the catalytic device?
Love the stove but it is not happy right now.
Thanks -
It would appear that they didn't fit a register plate? Forgive me if I'm wrong?A lot of the heat from the stove will go up the chimney round the flue pipe? Old soot from the chimney will fall onto the stove and fireplace. I have always used Rigidur as a register plate..it is a non asbestos fireproof board and easy to cut.

Hi Mark. I found this video very helpful with my own sticking air control lever on my Jotul Firelight. I am having another problem, though, and hope you can help with it. The ash door latch isn't engaging properly and therefore isn't tight enough. Nothing seems broken but it just won't tighten like it used to. I checked the Jotul Owner's Manual; it describes operation of the ash door but doesn't address adjustment or repair of the latch. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Good video: Image, sound, pace and explanation. I have the same stove and it sticks the same. I'd be hesitant to grind it even though that sounds logical. I'm going the graphite route. I need to do a general maintenance rebuild. Hope to find a video for that.

Very good at explaining

I had the same problem with my brand new F600 two years ago. It took some searching on the internet, but apparently Jotul is aware of this issue because they now make a replacement handle to solve the problem. The handle has a different bend on it to move the slider without catching.
The item is called "Air Valve Rebuild Kit" and the order number is 157678.
This apparently wasn't common knowledge, because I had to convince my fireplace dealer that I had found the answer on the internet and to please look into it. He did and sure enough, found the replacement piece. He installed and I haven't had a problem since.
Hope this helps! Love the stove! -
Looks like a design flaw to me, if you removed that plate that moves and ground it down slightly it wouldn't catch anymore. good luck

Great post. The Jig a Loo stuff was hard to locate. I found some Permatex Ceramic Brake Parts Lubricant at the auto parts store. Good to over 3000 degrees. No spray, but a brush in the cap. I put on liberally, and have enough left for many more repairs. Good stuff!!

Thank you! We have the same stove. We live in Iron County, MI, and this stove has been a God send. We've had it about 3 years.

I've got the same issue now, going to try it, thanks.

I have the exact same stove and I just had it serviced, the guy said that at night when you go to bed and you could close the flue and turn that lever to the minus side and it will keep the coals burning for about eight hours, Sounds right and is it safe?

If you own a Jotul wood stove that has a sticking air control lever, this video is a must see. I did a great deal of research on this issue and found out that the slide plate can be maintained by spraying high temperature graphite on it a few times every heating season. You can do the maintenance in about the same amount of time it takes to thoroughly clean the stove glass, which is less than 10 minutes. If you find this video helpful, please give me a thumbs-up, comment, and subscribe. Thanks for watching!
