Either I'm nuts or this is one of most elegant and enjoyable performances of the Fifth Symphony ever recorded. There is literally nothing I would change, and for once I was inspired to imagine the delight people feel when they discover that the third movement is a waltz. What... in a symphony? No worries, Tchaikovsky makes it work, bless his heart.

Funeral march, Eva? Really? I doubt it, silly girl.

Verle en directo es caer rendida ante su forma de dirigir la orquesta. Y le quedan muchos años por delante. Estamos ante un genio.
-
many thanks am a big fan of both the orchestra and Petrenko.
-
Every work conducted by Petrenko comes out GREAT.

The Valse was taken a little too fast. But other than that, it was a great performance.

A very enjoyable straightforward interpretation with no surprising changes of tempo. Of course, I will always enjoy interpretations that offer more individuality and personal interpretive touches. This is probably my favourite Tchaikovsky symphony and a great work such as this can support a variety of interpretive approaches.

Great.....

Bellissima interpretazione. Un chiaro disegno d'insieme; bel suono e finezza di accenti. Vasily Petrenko ha un bellissimo gesto direttoriale e una grande sintonia con l'orchestra.

Petrenko is really good. I watched him with Simon Trpceski doing the Rach 2nd at the Proms. It's great that he found a position with the Oslo Phil. I loved drinking in his solid, straightforward performance of the Tchaikovsky 5th--and I don't mean scotch. All the oddities and idiosyncrasies in tempos, balance one hears in performances like Bernstein, Karajan, Haitink are refreshingly absent in this beautiful performance.

More than the director, the essence is in the composer. Greatest Tchaikovsky.

Sounds amazing, well done mr petrenko
-
Fantastic. By the way, he looks like a young but friendly, honest and emotional Putin (i.e. contradictio in terminis)

There is no more natural "conducting animal" than Petrenko. Every motion of every part of his body is capable of giving a cue. I've heard him live in San Francisco from above the stage, and his ability to convey what he wants is remarkable--just by raising his eyebrows or wriggling some part of his body. A bad conductor like Pinchas Zukerman just beams at the orchestra and conveys nothing but the beat with his body and face. Petrenko has a rubber body in the same way Jim Carrey has rubber face.

Petrenko is a great discovery, for me.

Live recording on February 19 at the Oslo Concert Hall, performing Tchaikovsky Symphony no 5. The concert was a celebration of the appointment of Vasily Petrenko as the Chief Conductor Designate of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, a tenure that begins with the season 2013/14.
