Best version imo
-
it was all done in vain, for it happened again, and again, and again.
-
Sad but sweet, with a beauty that comes from the sorrow it expresses. Ah, but will we ever learn.
-
I don't do many comments on here but the high kings are just awesome my and my younger cousin love them and we are from the US and this is our favorite song there is such a beautiful story to it and you can see the story clearly unlike most music we have on the radio today
-
Simply FANTASTIC! with such emotion
-
Damn ninjas cutting onions.
-
this song will never get old. amazing.

With the renewed interest in WW1 since the new battlefield release, I share this song with my fellow gamers to remind them it was a real war and to try to bring moral context to the whole thing. Great song, long live the high kings!

Often called the "Great" war. I think it's been greatly forgotten with the passage of time. The last of the WWII vets are passing now, who are frequently referred to as "The Greatest Generation". Not to take anything away from them, but the generation before was the last to see horses ride into battle, and unfortunately, the introduction of mechanized warfare.

One of my favorite renditions of this tune. Bravo, Martin Furey. This brings me to tears each time I hear it.
-
My grandfather came back from that war, but according to Grandma, he wasn't the same, ever after. I've always prayed "if there must be trouble, let it come in my time, so my children can know peace." But my son has done three tours in Iraq, and my son-in-law has done two in Iraq, and one in Afghanistan. We seem to grow "too soon old, and too late smart."
-
can't say much but good, sad, thoughtful and most of all honorable
-
It's been over a 100 years, but those that lost their lives then are not forgotten. Someone remembers them, somewhere. This is also my favorite song in this album. :) The first time I heard it I cried a bit. This is a amazing song.

Governments start wars and young men do the fighting. (vietnam vet) I'm old but still wonder if the leaders of nations should just fight each other,
-

Well how do you do, young Willy McBride?
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside
And rest for a while 'neath the warm summer sun
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done
I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
When you joined the great fallen in nineteen-sixteen
I hope you died well
And I hope you died clean
Oh young Willy McBride, was is it slow and obscene?
(Chorus)
Did they beat the drums slowly?
Did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
Did the band play the Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
Did you leave here a wife or a sweetheart behind?
In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined?
Although you died back in nineteen-sixteen
In that faithful heart, are you forever nineteen?
Or are you a stranger without even a name
Enclosed then forever behind a glass pane
In an old photograph torn, battered, and stained
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame?
(Chorus)
The sun now shines o'er the green fields of France
There's a warm summer breeze that makes the red poppies dance
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds
There's no gas, no barbed wire, there's no gun firing now
But here in this graveyard it's still No Man's Land
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
To a whole generation that were butchered and damned
(Chorus)
Now young Willy McBride, I can't help but wonder, why?
Do those that lie here know why they died?
And did they believe when they answered the call?
Did they really believe that this war would end wars?
For the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the shame
The killing and dying were all done in vain
For young Willy McBride it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again
(Chorus X2) -
Am I the only one who thinks this is the perfect song for when your favorite character dies? It's sad but at the same time uplifting.
-
