Typical uneven pacemaking from those glory days. They needed someone who could run three 56 second laps at even pace but sadly never got it.

Ovett, who had never been into chasing times turned the form book upside down in this pre Olympic meet,going solo from a lap and half out.Maybe watching his great rival Seb Coe break the 1000m WR an hour earlier(to become the only man in history to hold the 800/1000/1500/mile records concurrently) inspired him a bit! Whatever,Ovett did just enough ,taking the mark down to 3.48.8.
