He said while writing this song he was writing its finish to his very long relationship with her, his common-law wife, and only woman he ever truly loved, and loved deeply, as he was composing it. Which means he was finished with her but she was unaware. He has a tear in this video, I suspect from this concert?

The version sung here is actually the original text/lyrics as printed in one of his early songbooks. So these verses are not really "new". When I sang this song on stage I always sang all verses.

So who was the so beautiful Marianne, and what did she do in the course of her life after rejection by Leonard?

BRUCE PINGREE; THANKS FOR REPLY, I AM SURE LEONARD WAS A NICE MAN IN HIS OWN WAY BUT ALL THIS ADULATION ABOUT MARIANNE IS SICKLY FALSE IF A WOMAN IS HAPPY WITH A MAN SHE WILL NOT LEAVE, BUT HE FORCED HER HAND HE WAS A FLAWED MAN WITH INSECURITIES BUT I AM AFRAID HE WAS NOT KIND MAYBE HE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO BE FAITHFUL AND KIND LOVE X

Marion Keogh: Where on earth did you get that ridiculous story? It is almost totally false.

One of my all-time favourite songs. Are you now buried with other Israeli greats in Jerusalem?

I just discovered this concert version. Love it! Still so sad that he is gone. Thank goodness his music will live on and on!

He is the one ,of the ones ,that I fell in love with him and his music from the very first time that my ears heard him , then and now. I'll never get enough ! I own many of his books and cd's as I find this the best way to hold him dear in my heart. His lyrics were so basic in many ways but the way that he shared his glimpse on life made one take note and look deeper into their very own soul. He sang of things that many will never allow themselves to feel much less think of. How humble can this be ? And his last, "You want it darker" was like none of his others. From the very first song, I felt a difference, I felt sorrow as I knew that he was gifting us one more time with his farewell. What a legacy he has left behind to cherish ! Leonard Cohen, you etched a place in my heart for all of eternity ! And how greater of an honor that he had than for his son Adam, to produce it. His life had purpose and meaning, it came about the full circle. Every time that I play your music, I play honor to your existence here on this earth. You left an imprint for all of us that have decided to see life as it is. Farewell Leonard, rest in peace Sir !

Leonard Cohen has performed many versions of "So Long, Marianne." The 1993 Oslo concert rendition includes not only a radically different arrangement but also two verses not found on any album. The impact is dramatic. More information about this and other variations of "So Long, Marianne" at http://Cohencentric.com/?p=18108
