The Circle Waltz, also known as the Oslo Waltz and frequently danced to the tune of that name is a popular Scottish and English Olde Tyme group dance. As such it is a favourite ‘mixer’ owing to the progression of partners and incorporates balances and changes from the old Spanish Waltz as well as a few simple glides and pirouette turns popular in old time sequence couple dances. In Australia the ‘chain on’ or progression of partners is typically taken from the Spanish Waltz figures of the Australian forms of the Alberts Quadrille in which the corner lady using pirouette steps is twirled across to her new partner’s right by his left hand. This is shown as version 1 in the typical Australian style. Version 2 is more the original European form of the dance where the ladies are ‘passed’ from left to right in a single turn. At the appropriate time the dance can be concluded with a ‘waltz the hall’.
